Education and Participation

James originally trained as a drama teacher before starting his career in theatre.  Since 2008 James has designed and led a number of creative learning projects in and around the London area.  This page gives a brief overview of some of James’ most recent work.

Primary Students

James has led projects that enable younger children to access world events or poetry, develop their writing skills or build their confidence through drama based techniques.  Most recently he has worked at Westbridge Primary School delivering extra-curricular activities for Gifted &Talented students and at Holy Trinity Primary School helping students develop their storytelling and creative writing skills.

Secondary Students

At secondary level James is able to either deliver drama workshops relating to specific exam board requirements or for devising theatre.  James has also led projects that are linked to specific curriculum areas.  For the past three years James has led a Maths through Drama workshop at Ricards Lodge High School for KS4 students who needed extra support in understanding specific maths questions.

Sixth Form Students

Again James is able to work with students on developing skills to devise their own theatre.  His most recent project was at King’s College School where students had weekly workshops on different practitioners and styles before developing their own performance.

Special Educational Needs

James has worked extensively with young people and adults with special educational needs.  His work includes a ten week project where KS3 students explored the theme of London and a six week project with 18-24 year olds who devised their own performance.

Adults and Older People

James has worked with older people by combining drama and reminiscence techniques.  Most recently James has been working with the Wimbledon Guild on a Patchwork Quilt project and with the residents of Nightingale House on a reminiscence project about immigration.

Teachers

James often works with teachers on how to use drama within their lessons.  Tasks and activities are simplified to ensure teachers with no drama background feel confident in using them in their lessons.  A recent training day focussed on the use of drama techniques to stimulate writing.

“The three hours went very quickly, an indicator of how much fun we were all having.  Speaking personally from the impact within my year group, I have definitely seen a positive correlation between the quality of writing and the use of drama as a stimulus.”

James has also written education resource packs for the Young Vic Theatre.
